Mobile Responsive Websites – Now is the Time

Nothing kills a user’s web experience faster than trying to navigate a non-responsive website on a mobile device.  What is a non-responsive site?  It is one designed only for desktop viewing.  On a mobile device, it looks out of date, with links too small for navigation, pictures that slide off the page and text that is too tiny to read without pinching and scrolling (and nobody likes to pinch and scroll these days).

Responsive Web Development

A responsive site, on the other hand, is one designed to look good on any device, from a desktop to a smartphone.  It loads quickly, is easy to navigate and easy to read.

Not too long ago companies designed two versions of their website, one for desktop viewing and one for mobile device viewing.  This was a labor-intensive and time-consuming endeavor, requiring maintenance and design updates on two separate sites.

Changing the World

With the recent explosion in mobile web usage, it is no longer necessary to have two versions of a company website.  A site with a responsive design guarantees an engaging user experience on a desktop, a laptop, a tablet or a smartphone.

Not only does responsive design make for a good user experience on any device, it also makes Google happy.  In fact, the search engine giant has been recommending sites become responsive for several years.   This is because Google wants its users to have a positive experience with the websites that it lists in its SERPs.  To that end, it gives better rankings to sites that provide that positive experience.

As Google itself has said, mobile is changing the world.  No longer is it enough to have a site that was designed for desktop viewing, hoping that it will look all right on smaller devices.  And no longer is it necessary to have two websites, one for mobile and one for desktop.  Now is the time to invest in a responsive design website that will look great across all devices.  Your website is, after all, your most important advertising tool.
